Lee Hee-Kyung
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to illuminate the relationship between self-compassion and other-compassion as well as validate the mediating effects of positive emotions and social connectedness in the process of expanding self-compassion to other-compassion. Self-compassion, positive emotions, social connectedness, and other-compassion were measured in 293 university students. The structural equation model was used to examine the relationship between variables and test the hypothesis. Results are summarized as follows. First, self-compassion, positive emotions, social connectedness, and other-compassion respectively, showed significant positive correlations. Second, in the relationship between self-compassion and other-compassion, positive emotions and social connectedness showed serial mediating effects. Third, self-compassion had a significant, indirect influence on other-compassion through the mediating variables, exclusively. Based on these findings, implications, limitations, and the necessity of further research are discussed.
